Timeline: March 20, 2003
This is a photograph of a Japanese anti-war protestor silently meditating at a shrine or altar on the Hiroshima Atom Bomb Memorial park grounds. Through the stone arch, the ruins of the “atom bomb dome” can be clearly seen – one of the few structures in downtown Hiroshima to remain standing after the atom bomb “Little Boy” struck the city on the morning of August 6, 1945. Present day Hiroshima bears few marks of the bombing and is instead a bustling and modern metropolitan area. Notice the two commercial buildings visible in the photograph surrounding the atom bomb dome.
This photograph was taken just a few days after the start of the ground offensive in Iraq.
